Commissioning a piece of bespoke jewellery is something that most people will not have done before and may find a bit daunting.
It has often been associated with engagement rings and heritage pieces but increasingly, people are choosing to have bespoke jewellery in silver and gold made when they have a specific idea in mind but cant find what they’re looking for. This could be a special piece for a wedding or a piece for everyday wear.
The process can be fun and rewarding but a lot of us find that with anything new, it helps if you know what to expect.
A good place to start is to find a jeweller whose style you like and have a think about the function of the piece you might like. Is it for you or a gift for someone else? Is it for a special occasion or is it everyday wear? Should it be fine and dainty or more chunky? Modern or traditional? It can be really helpful to have search online and put together some images that you like and also pieces that appeal strongly to you. Also have a think about your budget as this can determine materials used in your bespoke jewellery.
Next stage is to message the jeweller of your choice to arrange a time to have a chat about what you are considering - in person or by phone/zoom.
The jeweller will them put together a few designs based on your initial thoughts. This can take a few weeks depending on whether this will be in drawings or computer designs. These can then be adapted and tweaked if needed depending on feedback and preferences.
Once a design has been agreed, you will also be given an estimated price range and you will be asked to pay 50% deposit. Then the making starts - time scales on this will vary according to the project, materials and making process. You will be kept up to date on progress at all stages.
When your bespoke jewellery piece is finished, it will be hallmarked (depending on weight and type of metal),gift boxed and is then ready for collection/posting.
